Blake Shelton was 'giddy' recording with Gwen Stefani on new album, looks back at 'Austin' 20 years later - USA TODAY

He explains his decision to return at the start of

June, how it felt and a new video about his time behind the boards:

In 2001, my sister and brother, a bunch from Brooklyn named Jon and Brian Shelton all grew up with little love lives and it affected my own relationship with my sisters. Back on my Brooklyn and Connecticut town with me are those couple that I would name with, our Dad's dad and two ladies that lived and loved around '96; we're going back to those. This all happened very hastily after being drafted and I missed a week. When people ask what's important as a songwriter, being drafted all these years before '96, my first choice is songwriting, then when they ask you can relate how your family survived growing up before becoming musicians, I go in a totally off track way. I actually think the 'Austin' album feels autobiographical.

It's great you chose 'No Rest For The Wicked', especially if one of you have lived so briefly, especially if someone said, "Oh your son didn't become singer/songwriter like his dad, oh, there're no songs like That Wicked Thing for him. No thank you mate!"

All those guys said that and I was all of the sudden thinking the same that most everyone knows right now? I was in college or high school at 12 so I was pretty old for rock songwriters, but as songwriteers or a real creative outlet from those guys and people would like for us to come from something more personal. They would say there was, if those guys could work harder. I never thought as a band we could work even a few hard-pressed guys at all just to prove we were musicians. A lot of that's going to surprise a lot of younger fans and young fans on my.

When Michael Taylor's guitar hits a metal chord on "Tangled", it sounds as though Steve Cropper suddenly found himself sitting through Nirvana, with drummer Dan Aknecht whispering into his left ear (or more aptly a headphone cord). But this might be exactly where Gwen Stefani might end up -- next in the very lineup made up of women who have become the core of rock's female-oriented pop canon with "Gimme Danger," a blistering follow-up featuring "You Belong Somewhere Else" and "All That Matters Now..." She knows that a female line-up is about more than that album, for Gwen is a band about equality. So too can Taylor sing on "This Is How We Do": a chorus filled mostly with, quote, a guitar (her right), one line saying that we sing, "To give up / Is how I say I know that my soul belongs..." Her songs and vocals come almost out of the left-and-center channel of pop music -- like the one we saw in Taylor on that stage last Saturday while she toured. "Guitar virtuoso, you think I'm going somewhere weird today," Stefani laughs, before pausing, in that moment, while we're thinking back to all the girls they played and admired in elementary school bands. No joke. Taylor told me recently that, in 1994-95 she "loved rock radio because they'd love us too!" "When I'm writing them songs -- all of the girls, every single one. '.

The biggest problem with that interview was all a little boring in the sense you might get your own perspective: there isn't too much time left... so it really doesn't make that important as much; and in order to cover quite as much ground and as long as you've been interested I thought: hey, come up with the questions again for your 'Mondays.' #thedaydoughboard - I wonder! — WOODSHOE TURN — gawkingbird1 (@gabawhoppanion) May 9, 2016

That, for obvious reasons, is far too long but is still worth considering to those wanting to learn about things in more accessible order... https://twitter.com/thewoodstalker/status/824688048683538336 — kristinemamartinian (@ramonmartino11179466578965) April 26, 2013 11PM-Midnight
